The menopause or change of life as it’s often referred to, marks the end of menstruation. In the UK this typically happens around the age of 52. The menopause is caused by a change in the balance of a woman’s hormones.
Oestrogen is the female sex hormone which regulates a woman’s period. In the lead up to the menopause the body’s oestrogen levels start to fall preventing the ovaries from producing an egg.
Unfortunately the drop in oestrogen has a number of side effects that can cause physical and emotional issues too. These include hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, forgetfulness, loss of libido, mood swings and vaginal dryness.
Whilst most women require little or no treatment for the menopause some women suffer more severe effects. Quite often they will turn to hormone replacement therapy (HRT). This relieves symptoms by increasing oestrogen. However more and more women find that acupuncture is a suitable alternative. Safe and very effective.
Menopause and Acupuncture
Limited clinical trials have been carried out which show acupuncture to be at least as effective as HRT treatment for a number of women. It has been particularly successful in reducing hot flushes and reducing mood swings.
Interesting oestrogen levels in women have been shown to increase as a result of acupuncture although it is not certain that this is the root of the improvement seen.
It has been suggested that acupuncture stimulates the body to produce endorphins. These help stabilise the body’s temperature control mechanism which helps reduce the severity of the characteristic hot flushes.
In traditional Chinese medice acupuncture has been used for centuries. It is said to balance the energy flow through the body, the Qi pronounced “Chee.” Treatment is really quite painless and takes about 20 – 30 minutes. Needles are placed on various parts of the body depending on what particular symptoms are being addressed.

I first went to Cecile for acupuncture when I started the menopause. It was unbearable, I couldn’t sleep, think or function properly at work. My moods were all over the place and I wasn’t particularly pleasant to be around. Cecile transformed me back to normality after visiting her once a week through the bad times. She now sees me every six weeks and keeps my general health aligned. I haven’t had a day off work for over five years and I put it all down to Cecile; the acupuncture appears to keep my mind and body balanced and healthy. I can’t begin to imagine life without Cecile and her magic needles.
Cecile has treated my menopause symptoms i.e. hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings and constant tiredness with acupuncture for about 4 months now. The night sweats have stopped and I rarely get hot flushes anymore. I feel much more energetic too.
I had tried all manner of off the shelf medicines and herbal remedies with limited success. My friend Dawn put me on to Cecile at Touch2Heal to try acupuncture. What a difference? After a few months of treatment I really feel I’m not suffering any of the effects of the menopause at all.
